the impossible room

The Impossible Room is a relaxing experience for the Samsung Gear VR. Players are situated in a room consisting out of small cubes and can turn their head to look around. By swiping over the touch pad, they can move the cubes around to reveal a vast environment filled with non-euclidean geometry beyond the room or spawn small creatures, as they sometimes can be seen in the paintings of M.C. Escher. The experience was created for and playable during the M.C. Escher exhibition at the museum in Brühl, Germany.

My Role:

  • Game Designer
  • 3D Environment Artist

What I did:

  • Gameplay Design
  • UI Design
  • 3D Environment Assets

What I learned:

The Impossible Room was the first AR game I designed. I learned key differences between PC and mobile gaming, especially for VR games, and how to deal with limited input peripherals (Gear VR has only one touch input) to create an immersive experience. Due to the limited performance of the Gear VR, I also had to adapt my 3D artstyle and come up with interesting low poly architectural structures.
